Scan Steels up 10.2% after CRISIL reaffirms BBB+/Stable, A2 on Rs 238-cr bank lines
Reaffirmed ratings on key bank facilities ease funding concerns just as Q2 turnaround and capacity plans put growth back in focus.
Scan Steels Ltd was last traded at Rs 48.64, up 10.2% in Monday’s session, as investors reacted to a fresh credit-rating update from CRISIL that appears to validate the steel maker’s funding profile just after a sharp turnaround in quarterly earnings.
The move follows an exchange filing dated 05 November 2026, where the company disclosed the latest rating letter from CRISIL Ratings Limited on its bank facilities.
What CRISIL has said
According to the company’s intimation to BSE (page 1 of the filing), CRISIL Ratings Limited has assigned/reaffirmed the following ratings on Scan Steels’ bank loan facilities:
- "Total Bank Loan Facilities Rated" at Rs 238.00 cr
- "Long-Term Rating" at CRISIL BBB+/Stable
- "Short-Term Rating" at CRISIL A2
The enclosed CRISIL letter dated October 23, 2026 (page 2) reiterates the same:
"Total Bank Loan Facilities Rated Rs 238.00 cr"
"Long Term Rating Crisil BBB+/Stable"
"Short Term Rating Crisil A2"
CRISIL also notes that all ratings are kept "under continuous surveillance and review" and that this rating letter "will remain valid till March 31, 2027" (page 2). That validity window matters for lenders and investors because it signals that, barring new information, the current assessment of Scan Steels’ credit profile stands for the next several quarters.
How the bank facilities are structured
The annexure on page 3 of the CRISIL letter breaks down the Rs 238.00 cr of rated bank facilities across working capital, term loans and guarantees:
- Bank Guarantee with State Bank of India: Rs 10.00 cr
- Cash Credit with Punjab National Bank: Rs 50.00 cr
- Cash Credit with State Bank of India: Rs 70.00 cr
- Proposed Cash Credit Limit: Rs 0.96 cr
- Term Loan with Punjab National Bank: Rs 93.68 cr
- Term Loan with State Bank of India: Rs 13.30 cr
- Total: Rs 238.00 cr
All of these are shown with the same long-term rating of "Crisil BBB+/Stable" in the table on page 3, while the overall short-term facilities carry "Crisil A2" as stated on page 2.
For a small-cap steel producer, this mix of cash credit limits and term loans is central to funding raw material purchases, inventory and ongoing capex. A BBB+/Stable, A2 profile typically supports access to bank funding at reasonably competitive rates compared with lower-rated peers.
Why the rating update moved the stock
The filing itself is straightforward: it does not change the rating scale dramatically, nor does it disclose any revision in outlook beyond "Stable". However, the timing relative to other news around Scan Steels helps explain why the stock reacted.
From the live market read, investors have been digesting a set of positive triggers:
- A Q2 FY27 turnaround, with profit after tax swinging from a small loss in the year-ago quarter to a profit (as per the company’s earlier results communication; the credit-rating filing itself does not carry financials).
- A sharp year-on-year jump in operating earnings and revenue, even though sequential revenue has moderated.
- Announced plans to add billet capacity, which implies higher capital needs over the coming quarters.
Against that backdrop, the CRISIL letter does two things:
-
Confirms lender comfort at a key moment. The rating of CRISIL BBB+/Stable on long-term facilities and CRISIL A2 on short-term lines, covering Rs 238.00 cr of bank exposure, signals that banks and the rating agency are comfortable enough with Scan Steels’ credit profile to maintain these levels. The letter on page 2 explicitly states that "all ratings assigned by Crisil Ratings are kept under continuous surveillance and review", so the fact that the current opinion is being communicated now, after the Q2 numbers, is being read as a validation of the recent improvement rather than a red flag.
-
Reduces perceived funding risk for growth capex. The annexure on page 3 shows sizeable term loans of Rs 93.68 cr from Punjab National Bank and Rs 13.30 cr from State Bank of India, plus working-capital cash credit limits of Rs 50.00 cr and Rs 70.00 cr with these banks. For equity investors looking at Scan Steels’ capacity expansion plans, clarity that these existing facilities are rated at BBB+/Stable and A2 reduces anxiety around refinancing or cost-of-debt spikes.
The market read suggests that traders are connecting the dots: better Q2 profitability and expansion plans increase the need for reliable, affordable funding; a reaffirmed BBB+/Stable, A2 rating on Rs 238.00 cr of bank lines makes that funding path look more manageable. That combination appears to be the main driver behind the 10.2% intraday jump to Rs 48.64.
What the filing does not tell us
The CRISIL communication is narrowly focused on ratings and regulatory disclosures. It does not:
- Provide revenue, EBITDA, profit after tax or any other financial metrics for Scan Steels.
- Break out interest coverage, leverage ratios or cash-flow projections.
- Explain the analytical rationale behind the BBB+/Stable and A2 ratings in detail.
Instead, the letter carries the standard disclaimer (pages 2–4) that CRISIL’s rating "reflects Crisil Ratings current opinion on the likelihood of timely payment of the obligations under the rated instrument" and "is not a recommendation to buy / sell or hold the rated instrument".
For investors, that means the rating update must be read alongside the company’s separate Q2 and H1 FY 2026-27 results filing and its capex announcements to form a full view. The price reaction suggests the market is doing exactly that: rewarding the combination of improving fundamentals with a confirmed, investment-grade-style rating band that supports Scan Steels’ growth ambitions.
Bottom line
Scan Steels’ stock move is less about a surprise upgrade and more about confirmation. The reaffirmed CRISIL BBB+/Stable and CRISIL A2 ratings on Rs 238.00 cr of bank facilities, valid till March 31, 2027 as per the letter, appear to have reassured investors that the company’s lenders remain on board just as earnings and expansion plans are turning more ambitious. That alignment between credit comfort and growth narrative is what has pushed the shares higher in today’s trade.
