Kuantum Papers falls 3.7% on sharp Q2 PAT and EPS slide despite steady EBITDA margins
Stock reacts to weak profit and rising finance costs even as Kuantum touts capacity upgrades and efficiency gains in its Q2/H1-FY27 earnings deck.
Key takeaways
- Q2-FY27 operational income was Rs 279.10 cr, flat YoY and down from Rs 303.80 cr in Q1-FY27.
- Q2-FY27 PAT fell to Rs 2.20 cr from Rs 5.80 cr YoY and Rs 6.20 cr QoQ, with PAT margin at 0.79%.
- Q2-FY27 diluted EPS declined to INR 0.26 from INR 0.66 in Q2-FY26 and INR 0.71 in Q1-FY27.
- H1-FY27 EBITDA margin was 12.80% versus 14.88% in H1-FY26, while PAT fell to Rs 8.50 cr from Rs 17.80 cr.
- Net debt to equity rose to 0.73x in H1-FY27 from 0.66x in FY26 as borrowings and capex on plant upgrades increased.
Kuantum Papers’ shares were under pressure after its latest earnings presentation, with the stock last traded at Rs 66.38, down 3.7% in Thursday’s session. The move came after the company published a detailed Q2/H1-FY27 earnings deck that, while highlighting operational upgrades and stable margins, also laid bare a steep fall in profit and earnings per share.
What triggered the sell-off
The filing itself is upbeat on operations, but the numbers on page 11 of the presentation show why the market turned cautious:
- Q2-FY27 operational income was Rs 279.10 cr, almost flat year-on-year versus Rs 279.70 cr in Q2-FY26 and down from Rs 303.80 cr in Q1-FY27.
- EBITDA in Q2-FY27 inched up to Rs 34.50 cr from Rs 34.40 cr a year ago, but fell from Rs 40.10 cr in the previous quarter.
- EBITDA margin was 12.36% in Q2-FY27 versus 12.30% in Q2-FY26 and 13.20% in Q1-FY27.
- Profit after tax dropped to Rs 2.20 cr in Q2-FY27 from Rs 5.80 cr in Q2-FY26 and Rs 6.20 cr in Q1-FY27.
- PAT margin compressed to 0.79% from 2.07% a year earlier and 2.05% in Q1-FY27.
- Diluted EPS fell to INR 0.26 in Q2-FY27 from INR 0.66 in Q2-FY26 and INR 0.71 in Q1-FY27.
In other words, revenue held up but profit did not. That disconnect – flat top line, collapsing bottom line – appears to be the key driver of the stock’s decline after the presentation.
Margin optics vs profit reality
On page 8, management stresses that Q2-FY27 operational income was lower than Q1-FY27 “mainly due to the planned shutdown of one of the Paper Machine lines for upgradation and modernisation, which impacted both production and sales volumes.” Quarterly paper sales volume fell to 40,162 MT in Q2-FY27 from 42,644 MT in Q2-FY26 and 42,922 MT in Q1-FY27 (chart on page 8).
The same page notes that EBITDA margin was “resilient at 12.36%, being lower by only 84 bps than previous quarter despite combined headwinds of lower net sales realisation on account of seasonally lean demand period and higher raw material and fuel costs amid the ongoing West Asia War.”
However, investors seem less comforted by the modest margin slippage than concerned by the profit line:
- Finance cost rose to Rs 16.50 cr in Q2-FY27 from Rs 11.90 cr in Q2-FY26 and Rs 14.50 cr in Q1-FY27.
- Depreciation climbed to Rs 19.70 cr from Rs 16.30 cr a year ago and Rs 17.70 cr in Q1-FY27.
- As a result, profit before tax plunged to Rs 1.20 cr in Q2-FY27 from Rs 8.40 cr in Q2-FY26 and Rs 10.80 cr in Q1-FY27.
The filing does not explicitly link higher finance costs to specific borrowings, but the balance sheet on page 14 shows non-current borrowings rising to Rs 708.70 cr in H1-FY27 from Rs 589.70 cr in FY26 and Rs 402.70 cr in FY25, while current borrowings are Rs 252.90 cr in H1-FY27 versus Rs 270.10 cr in FY26. That higher debt base helps explain the step-up in interest expense and the squeeze on net profit.
H1-FY27: revenue growth but weaker profitability
The half-year view on page 12 reinforces the same theme:
- H1-FY27 operational income was Rs 582.90 cr, up from Rs 502.60 cr in H1-FY26.
- EBITDA was Rs 74.60 cr in H1-FY27 versus Rs 74.80 cr a year earlier.
- EBITDA margin softened to 12.80% from 14.88%.
- Profit after tax fell to Rs 8.50 cr in H1-FY27 from Rs 17.80 cr in H1-FY26.
- PAT margin nearly halved to 1.46% from 3.54%.
- Diluted EPS declined to INR 0.97 from INR 2.04.
So while revenue grew 16.0% year-on-year in H1-FY27, earnings did not follow. The historical income statement on page 13 also shows a multi-year trend of margin compression: EBITDA margin has moved from 27.49% in FY24 to 21.92% in FY25, 14.80% in FY26 and 12.80% in H1-FY27, while PAT margin has dropped from 15.17% in FY24 to 10.41% in FY25, 3.84% in FY26 and 1.46% in H1-FY27.
This longer-term deterioration in profitability likely adds to investor unease, even as the company invests for growth.
Heavy capex, higher leverage and what it means
The balance sheet on page 14 and the financial highlights on page 15 underline Kuantum’s capex-heavy phase:
- Property, plant and equipment increased to Rs 2,066.00 cr in H1-FY27 from Rs 1,809.90 cr in FY26 and Rs 1,601.30 cr in FY25.
- Total assets rose to Rs 2,559.50 cr in H1-FY27 from Rs 2,398.90 cr in FY26 and Rs 2,112.80 cr in FY25.
- Total equity was Rs 1,215.00 cr in H1-FY27 versus Rs 1,228.30 cr in FY26.
- Net debt to equity increased to 0.73x in H1-FY27 from 0.66x in FY26, 0.52x in FY25 and 0.39x in FY24 (chart on page 15).
On the positive side, the company is executing on its expansion and efficiency agenda:
- Paper Machine 3 was commissioned on 26th August in a “record time of 59 days, as against the planned shut of 65 days,” according to page 8. The rebuild includes a film press, I-table, table vision, web break monitoring, a state-of-the-art calendar system and an automatic starch cooking module.
- The Displacement Digester System (DDS) for wood pulping has “resulted in an improvement in pulp yield by 1.0% and a reduction in steam consumption from 1.8 MT to 0.8 MT” (page 8).
- The company achieved its “highest-ever copier paper production of 4,482 MT in Aug’26” and undertook major overhauling of a 20 MW turbine generator and a 130 TPH boiler (page 9).
These initiatives should, in theory, support future margins and volumes, but in the near term they contribute to higher depreciation, higher finance costs and pressure on reported earnings – exactly what the market is reacting to.
Sustainability and product mix: long-term positives, short-term ignored
The presentation also devotes space to sustainability and product development:
- Kuantum’s social farm forestry programme now covers 22,000+ acres, with an ambition to reach 75,000 acres by 2030 (pages 3 and 10).
- Q2-FY27 saw “the highest-ever clonal sapling production of 0.1793 cr” and an addition of 2,387 acres of social farm forestry (page 10).
- R&D has developed a PFAS-free 40 GSM Oil & Grease Resistant (OGR) paper for food wrapping (page 10), adding to its specialty portfolio.
While these are structurally positive, the day’s price action suggests traders are focused more on the earnings drag than on long-term ESG or product-mix benefits.
Market read: profit compression outweighs operational progress
The capital market data on page 15 shows Kuantum’s market price at INR 77.7 as of 30 September 2026, with a market cap of Rs 677.69 cr and promoter shareholding of 70.30%. From that reference point, the slide to Rs 66.38 in the latest session reflects a market that is reassessing the stock as leverage rises and profitability trends down.
The live market read does not flag any broker downgrades or specific guidance shocks tied to this presentation. That means the 3.7% intraday drop appears primarily linked to what the deck itself shows: flat Q2 revenue, a sharp fall in PAT and EPS, higher finance costs and a multi-year squeeze in margins, set against an aggressive capex and upgradation cycle.
The filing does not provide forward guidance on FY27 profitability or detailed commentary on pricing trends beyond noting a “seasonally lean demand period” and higher input costs. Without clearer visibility on when the new assets and efficiency projects will translate into stronger earnings, investors seem to be marking the stock down in response to the immediate hit to the bottom line.
